The Post Office Highlights the Value of Home Insurance as the Cost of Fire Damage Soars

Recent research by the Association of British Insurers has reported that the cost of fire damage in the UK is now higher than ever before. In light of these findings, the Post Office advises homeowners to ensure they take out adequate home insurance to cover valued possessions against fire.

During the first half of 2009, insurers paid out £639m due to fire damage, whilst the cost of the average domestic fire claim doubled to £8,000 in the last decade. In response, the Post Office is encouraging people to review their current home insurance policy to ensure any recent purchases, such as new electrical goods or furniture, are covered by their current levels of contents insurance.

Post Office Home Insurance advises homeowners to check specific home insurance cover levels are still appropriate to cover all fixtures, fittings and furnishings around the house. It is also worth considering the actual value of replacing all items in the home – including clothes in the wardrobe – when revisiting home insurance cover, to ensure everything could be replaced should a disaster such as a fire or flooding occur.
