The Post Office Highlights the Value of Home Insurance as the Cost of Fire Damage Soars

London, UK (PRWeb UK) February 6, 2010

Recent research by the Association of British Insurers has reported that the cost of fire damage in the UK is now higher than ever before. In light of these findings, the Post Office advises homeowners to ensure they take out adequate home insurance to cover valued possessions against fire.

During the first half of 2009, insurers paid out £639m due to fire damage, whilst the cost of the average domestic fire claim doubled to £8,000 in the last decade. In response, the Post Office is encouraging people to review their current home insurance policy to ensure any recent purchases, such as new electrical goods or furniture, are covered by their current levels of contents insurance.

Post Office Home Insurance advises homeowners to check specific home insurance cover levels are still appropriate to cover all fixtures, fittings and furnishings around the house. It is also worth considering the actual value of replacing all items in the home – including clothes in the wardrobe – when revisiting home insurance cover, to ensure everything could be replaced should a disaster such as a fire or flooding occur.

LV= Warns of

LV= Warns of £264m Repair Bill for Alcohol-Fuelled Home Accidents

Croydon, London (PRWEB) July 28, 2010

LV= is warning that accidents caused by Brits drinking and partying at home this summer is predicted to leave UK homeowners with a total repair bill of £264 million*.

New research by LV= home insurance (http://www.lv.com/insurance/home_insurance/ ) suggests that the explosive combination of the football world cup and hot weather has fuelled a boom in alcohol-related accidents, as Brits increasingly hold parties at home. Based on last year’s breakages, 73,000 TV/computer/games console accidents, 686,000 stains on carpets, and 955,500 breakages have already happened this summer.

Of last year’s accidents 56% admitted that alcohol was involved and 31% stated the guest who did the damage was ‘quite drunk’ when the accident happened. A further 44% admitted they were ‘a bit tipsy’ at the time. The most common accident was broken glass or crockery (29%), followed by spillages causing damage to furniture (22%) or stained and damaged carpets (20%).

LV= (http://www.lv.com/ ) is warning homeowners to ensure they opt for accidental damage cover as part of their home contents insurance (http://www.lv.com/insurance/home_insurance/tips_advice/home-contents-insurance ), so that if any serous mishaps occur they are not left out of pocket paying to put the damage right.

According to the LV= survey, 19% of Brits expects to entertain more this summer than last year, with the average household hosting three gatherings over the season. The hot summer appears to be making Brits more likely to open their doors to friends, with 49% citing the weather as a major reason to celebrate at home.

The wave of sporting events this summer is also encouraging 12% of Brits to entertain more, while 5% claim that a TV event like an X-Factor final spurs them to plan a party. Around one in seven parties (15%) ends in some sort of damage caused either by the host or an over-enthusiastic guest.

The research findings echo internal home insurance claims (http://www.lv.com/insurance/home_insurance/how-to-make-a-claim ) data from LV=, which shows that homes suffer more accidental damage over the summer months than at any other time of the year.

John O’Roarke, managing director of LV= home insurance, said: “Everyone enjoys having get-togethers at home and the hot weather is a great excuse for a party. But our research shows that having friends over can often result in accidents, and we see thousands of insurance claims each year for problems like red wine spillages on carpets. We are therefore warning homeowners to ensure they have accidental damage cover as part of their home buildings and contents insurance (http://www.lv.com/insurance/home_insurance/tips_advice/buildings-contents-insurance ), so that they’re protected in the event of anyone celebrating too enthusiastically.”

Escaping from the Winter Grey? Home Protection While on Holiday

Escaping from the Winter Grey? Home Protection While on Holiday

(PRWEB) January 26, 2008

Many Britons are preparing to grab a short getaway to escape the dreary weather — and the last thing they want is to worry about unforeseen breakdown problems at home. Homeserve have launched their HomeMinder Cover to protect against just that.

New research from Homeserve, specialists in home emergency repairs and insurance, reveals that more than a quarter of Brits (28%) have returned from a short break or holiday to find a nasty surprise waiting for them, with breakdowns such as broken boilers, failed appliances and electrical faults being the most commonly cited home emergencies.

The findings come as temperatures across the UK plummet, a factor which will undoubtedly spell trouble for many homeowners as boilers and central heating are turned up to the max. The company says that those people planning to leave their home during winter have to consider that icy temperatures can freeze and in some cases burst water pipes. This can lead to some serious leak damages.

Homeserve research found that Top Ten Post-Holiday Calamities are:

1)    Boiler and central heating problems

2)    Failure of appliances such as white goods

3)    Electrical problems such as power failure

4)    Burst pipes

5)    Evidence of break in or attempted break in

6)    Blocked drains

7)    Broken windows or doors

8)    Damage to the roof

9)    Pest invasions

10)    Lost house keys

The hotspots for post-holiday home emergencies were the South East of England (32%) and the West Midlands (30%), where nearly one in three holidaymakers have returned to find a disaster awaiting them. Those least likely to return to a home emergency were those in the North East of England where one in five can expect household calamities on their return (20%).

In light of this, Homeserve have introduced a new policy to offer peace of mind to winter holidaymakers. The new HomeMinder Policy provides up to six weeks’ cover against home emergencies commonly experienced while policyholders are on holiday or discovered on their return.

This cover has been developed to provide protection against home emergencies usually not covered by home buildings and contents insurance. It also provides welcome simplicity if a problem does occur while away – the policyholder nominates a key holder who checks on the property. If a repair is needed, they need only call a 24/7 free number to arrange a convenient time for a reliable tradesman to be on hand.

Jon Florsheim, CEO, Homeserve GB said: “There’s always a sense of disappointment when holidays end and the last thing anyone needs is to return home to frozen pipes or broken down heating. We’d urge people to check the level of cover on their existing home insurance and take out additional cover if necessary.”

So, with many about to make their great escape, it’s wise to think about home repair protection.
